Black 2 Purple

Moving into the squig riders are the goblins themselves, and will make up the remaining of the multipart tutorial series on the Mauler Squig. With the cloth, my initial idea was to go for some Black Robes. Even looking back at that decision, it was kinda dumb since it really lacked any kind of colour at all. With the theme of the model being really bright and neon, this had to change and going back to look at the first Mauler my choice of robes was much better. But rather than throw all that work away from volume highlights and their positioning. I could instead tint and influence the values that were in place and push it towards purple to the final results shown.

With Tiniting, this may seem straight forward and also with a black robe, Im not working with many colours to begin with. But it’s something I find important to go through and with this in mind, will save you from many hours of re-painting or even worse, just letting a colour you don’t like much be left cause of the added effort to repaint the entire segment. Refining this technique and adding it to your kit will greatly give you a wider birth of flexibility as a painter, as well as giving you the confidence on trying new colours without much fear of changes. You can literally work your way through it, and the best feeling is that you feel like painting. Not some robot that must do things in sequence, but rather more spontaneously and keeping the brush moving.

In future projects and possible live streams, I will make a note to make use of this more often and showcase other techniques and situations that are related to the robes here to give you a greater understanding and the workflow. For now, I have these reference pictures of both the black robes and the changed versions along with another goblin rider that has purple robes but has been painted with purple in mind from the start (Not going through the Black robe stages).

PS. If you want black robes, well now you have a recipe in the tutorial by keeping to the first half!
