Purple Ballz & AK

With the Mauler Squig nearing completion along with the tutorial series, there is if you guessed it…Another Mauler Squig that I’m painting! Yes my client did order 2 on top of the one that I painted almost 2 years ago to bring his total to 3 pairs of Mauler Squigs. And this one is Purple, like we can get enough purple with the robes first off, and now it being the main feature! I won’t be publishing another full tutorial series on this one given it would be a bit redundant as essentially its painted in the same method as the orange and blue, but with some colour swaps. But I did want to give you a paint list here in case you are looking to recreate the colour palette for your own, or want to get these hues on another project. Make your way down to the end of the post to get this list.

Speaking of paints in a related subject. AK Interactive have been kind enough to send me a goodie bag with a couple of paint sets, some acrylic thinner, and some Light & Dry Crackle Effects for basing! The sets are: Anime Figures, special flesh and skins personally mixed by Keigo Murakami and Eternal Darkness Black and Dark Effects. I have a little bit of experience painting with AK 3rd gen paints mainly just with their base primary colours and a few extra greens (cause I like painting green), and these sets really open the door into their line of mixed colours that are easier to fit into a daily project workflow. I do have an AoS miniature in mind that I will be sharing the start of in a weeks time that will be featuring all AK paints. Really to put them under the test to see how they react to various brush techniques, paint finish, and even mix them with my other favourites on the work bench.

Now getting all these goodies in the mail, I couldn’t simply wait to use them on this new project. So I whipped out a few colours (Burnt Umber, Burnt Red, Sahara Yellow, Pastel Yellow, White) and tried out some NMM Gold on these purple Squig Ballz! Really fun stuff starting off with the gold tooth as its a much easier shape, then moving onto that metal squig mask which was a workout! So far they thinned out quite well and make strong use of “moving the pigment around to settle” sort to speak. With the new AoS model and tutorial coming, it will make more sense to show it in action. But my initial workings with these colours together felt good and I wasn’t seeing separation on the palette and my strokes had little tracing with each pass. I’ll leave you here now with some WiP pictures of these squigs and the paint list below. Take care and happy painting fam!

Squig Skin: Amethyst Blue(AK), Ultramarine Blue(AK), Flourecent Blue(AK), Deep Purple(AK),White(S75).

Gums: Burnt Red(AK), Deep Purple(AK), White (S75), Black Leather(S75)
