Emerging from Hybernation UPDATE!

Hey everyone, it's been a week since I've landed back from Japan and I the worst of the jet lag is over finally! While sluggishly recovering and doing my best with some less-than-restless nights, I'm coordinated and back on the brush! It's been a while since I was painting the Troggoth and honestly, it was actually from a lack of feeling I was getting from the miniature.

Sometimes there are projects in which you kind of psych yourself out, stall on a roadblock and simply have a sort of fear of touching the model any further. That's what I described as the Troggoth and the feeling I had thus far. There are just so many ways I can illustrate this model, and also a sense of self to push this model further into some new territory. What I needed with him was some time away and a fresh sense of perspective I needed to fulfill this model to the finish. And with that, I needed to write down and check out ideas to get a clearer picture of what I was painting. Starting this I only had a vague clue as to what colours and feeling I wanted this model to be. Orange and Green were my 2 starting colours as a baseline from the first tutorial shown. Now I've done pieces in the past where you're creating off the cuff and that's fine too, but you gotta realize when something isn't working, we need to come up with a solution and change direction.

Sketching out the backside is always a good tactic to test ideas; it would be the focal point of the arch and how to illustrate it. I'll be finishing the model weathering with fresher soil, grass, moss and mud into the final composition to illustrate him emerging out of the ground which will be of a separate part tutorial and most likely at the very end.

Also on a bit of gear news, I received my order of the new Kimera Brush set and will be happy to give it pace and let you all know how these brushes handle. I also got a new camera! The new Fujifilm XT5 along with a beautiful 80mm Macro lens is pleasing to shoot with. Always been envious of Fuji's colour science and how they process images in a more natural feel and even the retro analog dials :P Ok, you don't see it, but I use it every day to film tutorials, shoot for socials, and to study my work.

Wrapping this up, next week will be the Troggoth Part 2 covering the arch OSL, earth and Vines. Thanks again for your patience as I've been itching to get back to the flow of things. Have a great week and happy painting.
