Flesh Eater Courts Vampire Update

Hey everyone, this past week I was sent the new Flesh Eater Courts army box and what arrived was a really surprising line-up of new undead ghouls, vampires, and bat-like cavalry which would turn even the bravest of the old world running for the hills (fear checks plenty!) I was excited in particular of the new Winged Vampire as he's truly a stunning piece with wonderful anatomy to paint. So much in fact that I just had a drop everyone I was painting to give him a couple of days under my brush to see what I could come up with!

My approach to his skin is somewhat of a first for me. Familiar in the sense of working with a green/blue undertone, but now to mix that with flesh to create a sort of cold, sickly, and thin transparent unnatural skin. Inspiration was also drawn from an artist I've greatly enjoyed throughout many years, Edward Povey. Particularly how his subjects are illustrated in emotional realism with a mixed perspective of cubism. But it's his way of illustrating flesh that intrigues me and I now have a subject in which I can try this with a model that's almost entirely nude.

Following this piece it was helpful to start looking at nude drawings and paintings. Seeing how various musculatures are highlighted especially with the subjects flexed. As this model is both in a tense and aggressive posture, he's got almost 0% body fat. Pretty lean for a dude who eats a LOT of meat and no veggies lol.

The sad news is that the majority of the footage I had recorded in the process of painting his thigh and arm/shoulder/joint into the wings was recorded poorly. I was stupid to rely on the autofocus and I was so caught up in the painting, I didn't realize this on my recording monitor. It's very upsetting to find an exciting project and want to share it in a new tutorial, only to find the footage is 80% blurry, and that's not the kind of quality you all deserve to watch and learn through. I know how important a sharp image to see the brush strokes, how the paint is settling and how patterns being laid down are.

But to make up for this I'll be going ahead and painting another vampire model's skin to show you how this flesh is painted, both the pale green and the red warmer flesh around the joints. Please be patent and I look forward to sharing it with you later this month!

Happy Painting,

Bb
