Morvenn Vahl

I'm happy to present you the finished piece of Morvenn Vahl, a sister of battle character from Games Workshop 40k universe that I painted as a commission. Even more pleased is that I'll be finally diving into the rest of the Sisters of Battle range with more characters coming in the near future. As much as I love space marines, and the silhouettes they create with the iconic armour. Painting imagery of the imperium with a feminine aspect is exciting. Combining the decorative armour, curves, and lighting will be a great challenge and one that I first met when painting this character.

For the past few projects, I've been switching my approach and working off more direct reference images when it comes to colours on the palette. Often I will surf through Pinterest save images from Instagram and categorize them either in their own subject folders and either divide them from miniature paintings to colour palettes. The latter I would use mostly when it comes to images not related to miniature painting, but rather digital or canvas paintings mostly in very different subjects with a strong use of colour I feel I could use to convey on future projects. I would in the past eyeball this and allow my memory to mix in the feeling of what colours give me and proceed to paint with those colours in mind. This method doesn't get the best accuracy in those exact colours used, but it does allow me to keep the "feeling & idea" alive through the painting process. And if you've noticed in a few of my latest tutorials, I've included some Photoshop processes in the introduction to bring you into the concept.

Coming up I'll be trying out some new teaching methods to help expand my curriculum in miniature painting. With a Livestream(discord) which was announced last week, as well as a new video tutorial based on Morvenn Vahl; a deeper dive into using references and applying them to your painting process. My goal in these new approaches is to make more of my process as transparent as possible to give you the full experience & everything that goes into each painting. Where recipes are a great tool and things we can learn from; but if you know me and my ethos, it's only a small part of a much larger picture.
